Country of Origin Designations for Auto Manufacture and Production

How to determine the manufacturing country of origin of vehicles:

The first digit in the sequence of the V.I.N.  corresponds to the country of manufacturing origin – that is where the vehicle  had its final assembly.  While it may be true that parts may have been made in Nafta manufacturing regions countries or even offshore, the nice at people at Canadian Border Services will use the first digit as the determining factor for import duties and as to whether the auto import amateur importer has his or her vehicle impounded or drives home with their new purchase

1)  Number “1″  USA

2) Number “2″  Canada

3) Number “3″  Mexico

4) Number “4″ Joint manufacture either GM and a foreign subsidiary or Ford and its subordinates

5) Number “5″ England

6) Character Letter “J”  ( as opposed to a number”   Japan

7) Character Letter “K”     ( as opposed to a number”           )      Korea

8) Character Letter “G”         ( as opposed to a number”          )  Germany

9)  Character Letter “Y”              ( as opposed to a number”     )     Yugoslavia
