I’ve been watching the videos on You Tube about the Studebaker Desert Explorer models for 1950. I remember seeing a picture of a derelict one in SIA magazine decades ago, and they didn’t know what it was. I think this is fascinating. Studebaker abandoned quite a few prototypes and test vehicles at its South Bend proving grounds. These Youtube videos are part of a video tour of this graveyard shot in 1993. The video is narrated by Mike Lenyo. One of the vehicles at this site is a 1950 Desert Explorer. This car is shown at the beginning of the first video linked above.
In 1980 Mr. Lenyo was part of a team that removed the 1947 Studebaker woody wagon prototype from this graveyard. This car was later restored and is now in the Studebaker National Museum collection. Mr. Lenyo is currently heading up group which is planning to remove the Desert Explorer. In 1971 SIA published an article documenting the 1969 discovery of the Studebaker graveyard. The article is currently available on the Hemmings blog.
