Volvo C-70

The C70 Coupe and Convertible look almost too good to be Volvos. Indeed, the Volvo badging is the only thing with a straight line on these cars.

Two new variations are added for a total of four models this year. The HPT models are highly “motorvated” by a 236-horsepower 2.3-litre high-pressure turbo-charged in-line “five”. LPT models do almost as well with the 190-hp 2.4-litre low-pressure turbo motor. In either case, the engines drive the front wheels. For 1999, a new 4-speed electronic adaptive automatic transmission adjusts to the driver’s individual driving patterns. The selectable winter mode is still included. Volvo’s Stability and Traction Control (STC) is available. Increased security is provided by larger Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) airbags and the addition of a Whiplash Protection System.

Ferrari 550 Maranello

The 550 Maranello is your basic front-engine, rear-drive, two-seat sports coupe -NOT! While the formula and styling seem traditional and North End Garden City Maples Used Truck Dealership, there’s lots about this Ferrari that’s over-the-top and/or futurama. Like the 456M 2+2 it’s based on, the Maranello has an aluminum body welded to an alloy steel frame.

The long front hood harbours an even more potent rendition (485 hp at 7,000 rpm, 419 lb.ft at 5,000 rpm) of the 5.5-litre, 48-valve, V12. The 6-speed manual is mounted as a unit with the final drive in the rear. There’s traction control so things don’t get out of hand, but no, Sheldon, you can’t have an automatic.

With the exception of the baulky shifter, this Ferrari is as user-friendly as a Corolla. But unlike the Toyota, this thing’s geared for 320 km/h and can get there in an awfully big hurry.

Luxury Sedans Under $50,000

  • This car isn’t just spacious, it’s very practical as well. There are sufficient, nicely located storage spots in the cabin, even though there are more up front than in the rear seat area. The trunk is nice and square and luggage handling is great with such a low door and besides, cargo space can be doubled by lowering the rear seat bench.

What We Disliked

  • This car is over-priced because it isn’t really a luxury car and even the XLS is still a Toyota and it’ll never be a Lexus.
  • Stylistics aren’t great and it’s about time that the Toyota car designers added a little spice to their blah, insipid, uninspiring products.
  • Steering lacks character definition and it can get vague and you need to keep a close eye on it in cross-winds. The wide steer angle radius definitely hampers maneuvers.
  • Noise is more palpably present that in other equivalent vehicles, especially road noise that’s an indicator of some serious flaws in the soundproofing.

Verdict

The Avalon is geared to attract seasoned customers who are out to buy a plain and passionless mode of transportation, but who want a fast, comfy, reliable vehicle that’s nice and conventional and doesn’t cause any waves. Mission accomplished…

New for 1998

  • Cosmetic touches on the front and rear fascias.
  • More extensive equipment on the XLS that now includes fog headlamps, CD player, wood trim and coded ignition immobilizer anti-theft system.
  • The XL model has lost some feathers, since it’s no longer equipped with traction control, alloy rims or sunroof.
